ROLE MODEL:
Étienne Maurice Falconet, sculpture and literature
Devoted to the little-known side of Falconet, the book aims to show the master’s works as a total phenomenon, unfolding along its own logic. The text collects the seeming contradictions and, without detracting from the oeuvre’s praises, outlines forces driving the development and the unpredictable narrative twists of Falconet’s career. Falconet’s works are examined alongside those of his contemporaries and colleagues: teachers, rivals, followers (Jean-Baptiste Lemoine, Edmé Bouchardon, Paul-Ambroise Slodtz, Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, Jean-Antoine Houdon)
